Lawns can be seeded any time of the year but fall seeding is ideal for your lawn.

Annual seeding can provide tremendous benefits to a lawn, such as:

  • Your lawn will green-up earlier in the spring
  • Better color in hot weather
  • Later color in the fall
  • Helping the lawn fill in
  • Less water consumption in hot weather
  • Rebalance the Bluegrass/Fescue blend that gives a great lawn even texture and color
  • Core Aeration: Improves root system, thatch, water drainage, overall lawn health
  • Improved health to resist and recover from disease, insect damage and summer stress

If you plan to seed yourself, follow these helpful tips to launch a successful lawn seeding project:

  • Call us at (913)789-9333 to make an appointment with our office to pick up great quality seed
  • If you opt to shop around, it is worth the time to check around. The label should state at least 80% germination, 0% weeds, and 0% other crop. Weeds you obviously don’t want. The other crop can include some really nasty problems, such as annual bluegrass, rough bluegrass, annual rye grass and orchard grass.
  • Start early. Mid to late August is ideal, but any time in September is still good. The later the seed is applied, the longer and more costly the establishment of the new seedlings become.
  • Never buy seed and mulch in a bag. We have never found good seed in those bags and rarely see those projects mature into anything but more work in the future.
  • Prepare the ground thoroughly. There are several good options, going from the basic spot seeding job, to the annual maintenance level seeding, all the way up to doing a major renovation.
    • Spot Seeding – Rake and/or otherwise open the soil with hand tools
    • Annual Over seeding – Core aerate thoroughly to open soil and deposit soil on top of the seed
    • Major Renovation – Use a verticutter to make 1/2 inch deep furrows in the lawn, then core aerate over the top after applying the seed
  • Once the seed is down, the real work must begin…watering! The lawn will need water two or three times per day (depending on wind and temperature) to get the best germination and seedling survival.
