Keep Mower Blades Sharpened Regularly

While mowing with a sharp blade is important for the look of the lawn, a sharp mower blade also plays an important role in a lawn’s health.

Below are some important benefits and reasons to sharpen mower blades regularly:

  • A dull blade rips and tears the grass blade, leading to a higher susceptibility for disease and fungus to enter the grass plant.
  • The result of mowing with a dull blade is a lawn with unsightly brown tips.

How often should I sharpen the blade for my mower?

  • If you have a standard-sized residential lot, sharpening 2-3 times per year is sufficient.
  • If your lawn is on a larger lot, the blade will be working overtime and will need to be sharpened more often.
  • Also, mowing over sticks, leaves and other debris will dull your mower blades more quickly.  Thus, sharpening more often is a good idea.

What is the easiest way to sharpen the blade for my mower?

  • A bench grinder or a bastard file will both give you a good edge on your mower blade.
  • If you prefer to have it done by others, you can purchase an extra blade from a local mower shop or hardware store (they are relatively inexpensive).  This way, you will always have a sharp blade on your shelf when it is needed most and you can drop off the dull blade at a local mower shop or hardware store to be sharpened.
