As leaves change color across Kansas City, it’s easy to assume your trees are finished growing for the year. But beneath the surface, their roots may still be active. That makes fall a valuable opportunity to evaluate tree health and provide nutrients where they’re needed.
At Martz Bros. Lawn Care & Tree Doctor, our certified arborists specializing in plant health care can help determine whether fall fertilization is right for your landscape.
Why fertilize in fall?
Tree roots continue growing into fall while the soil remains warm enough. When a tree needs supplemental nutrients, applying fertilizer during this period makes those nutrients available to active roots. K-State Research and Extension identifies the period from the beginning of fall color through leaf drop as an appropriate fertilization window.
Fall fertilization can also provide nutrients that trees store in their roots and stems for use during spring growth. For trees with a nutrient deficiency, that can help support healthier growth in the season ahead.
Does your tree need fertilizer?
The answer starts with an evaluation. Small or pale leaves and limited new growth may indicate a nutrient issue. However, drought, planting problems, root damage and disease can cause similar symptoms. Fertilizer will not correct those underlying problems.
Healthy trees may already receive sufficient nutrients from the soil, decomposing organic matter or nearby lawn fertilization. Before picking up a bag of fertilizer, have a qualified arborist determine what your trees actually need.
A plan based on your trees
Our arborists can assess your trees and growing conditions, discuss your concerns and recommend appropriate care. When fertilization is warranted, the recommendation should account for existing nutrient sources, soil conditions and moisture. Trees need adequate water to use fertilizer effectively.
The right recommendation may include fertilization, changes to watering or other care. It starts with understanding the tree and the conditions around it.
