Seed Care Instructions

Now that you have scheduled your lawn renovation. Its time for proper seed care. The success of your investment depends upon what happens after the seed is down. WATER IS VITAL!

Follow these seed care instructions for optimal results:

  • The soil surface must be continuously moist prior to, during, and after seed germination. On a windy or warm day, this may require watering your seeded areas 2 or 3 times per day. If the germinating seeds or seedlings dry out, even for a short time, they will die. Give extra watering attention to the edges of the lawn where it is hard to water and fast to dry.
  • Continue to water until the seedlings are tall enough to need regular mowing. Once the new grass is up to mowing height you can gradually return to a more normal watering schedule of about 1-1.5 inches per week.
  • BE PATIENT-Even with ideal planting and watering, you will not see any results for 7-14 days with tall fescue and 10-14 days with bluegrass. Not all of the seed will germinate at the same time. As days grow shorter and the soil cools down, in late September, grass seed begins to take even longer to germinate and develop.
  • Even under perfect conditions, it will take six weeks or more for a tall fescue to reach mowing height. Bluegrass will not reach mowing height until next spring. At that time, each grass plant will gradually develop more blades and will occupy an increasingly larger amount of space to form a thick stand of turf.

Mowing:

  • Mow, as needed, to a height of 3 inches.
  • Prevent leaves from matting into the lawn.
  • Foot and pet traffic will damage seedlings, so minimize traffic as much as possible.

By following the above seed care instructions, your lawn will fill in and start to crowd out weeds more effectively. If you still need to schedule your fall lawn renovation or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (913)789-9333 or ONLINE.
