Most lawn problems can be easily repaired, but the use of the wrong seed can ruin your lawn like nothing else.

It is extremely important to choose grass seed wisely by:
  • Never buying grass seed unless the label says it has at least an 80% germination rate, 0.0% weeds, and 0.0% other crop. Weed and other crop seeds can include grassy weed types that will permanently ruin your lawn. READ THE LABEL or buy all of your grass seed from Martz Bros.

Bluegrass – The single best grass for this part of the country out of the cool-season grasses grown in this area. It does have its weaknesses: an initial heat intolerance and its susceptibility to Summer Patch. Bluegrasss strength is in its ability to recover and repair damage. Because of those strengths and weaknesses, bluegrass performs best in combination with tall fescue to provide the strengths of both grasses with the healing ability of the bluegrass.

Tall Fescue– Usually darker green, resistant to Summer Patch and has a better initial heat and drought tolerance than bluegrass. Although some of the newer cultivars of tall fescue can spread just a tiny bit, the best tall fescue lawns should contain some bluegrass mixed into them so that imperfections in the turf can heal. A 90/10 pr 95/5 tall fescue/bluegrass blend is a good combination for full sun to moderate shade.

Creeping Red and Chewings Red Fescues – Grows in heavier shade than other commonly used grasses.

Ryegrass – Not recommended except in areas that suffer from soil compaction and in areas that need frequent reseeding or very fast establishment.
