Dormant Seed Lawn Now = Great Lawn Next Spring

If you missed the window for early fall seeding, don’t worry. Dormant seeding is the next most effective, efficient, and economical way to fill in a thin or bare lawn.

DO NOT wait until spring to get any thin or bare areas seeded. Instead, put your seed down now or anytime now through early January. The goal is to get the seed on the lawn after the soil cools down, so the seed cannot germinate or rot; but before the ground is covered with snow.

Dormant Seed Preparation and Application

Other than cleaning up the leaves, no preparation is needed. Just apply the seed to the areas that you want to fill in. Over the winter, each freeze/thaw cycle will work the seed into the soil. That same freeze/thaw cycle will also prepare the seed for the earliest possible germination, as soon as the moist soil begins to warm up in the spring.

Advantages of Dormant Seeding:

  • Dormant seeding can be performed on any lawn.
  • It is especially advantageous for shady lawn areas, because the seed is applied after leaves are picked up in the fall.
  • Dormant seeding is far more effective, easy and economical than spring seeding.
  • Very Effective because earlier germination and development gives the new grass more time to develop before hot summer weather.
  • Dormant Seeding is easier because of the decreased need for nearly constant watering, compared to all other seeding methods.
  • Economical because dormant seeding requires no soil preparation and less watering.

Overall, dormant seeding is the most effective, economical, efficient way to seed a lawn when early fall seeding was not possible, practical or economical.
