It’s easy to ignore your lawn in the winter, but these winter lawn care tips will save time and money when spring hits:

Lawn Traffic

• Keep foot, vehicle and pet traffic off the lawn as much as possible. If you cannot keep traffic off the lawn, look for ways to distribute the traffic over a broad area.
• If possible, don’t let pets go to the bathroom in the same areas over and over. Scooping poop helps, but will not offset the urine damage.

Lawn Mowing

• When you mow your lawn for the first time of the season, cut it shorter (without scalping). Mow it to a height of 2 ½” (1st mowing only), you will remove the brown and dormant tips and promote new growth.
• Keep the mower set high (3 – 4 inches) the rest of the year!
Now is the time to sharpen the blade on your mower!

Lawn Maintenance

• If the lawn is dry in March, consider watering the lawn a little to encourage germination, but a lot of watering will not be needed.
• Clean up leaves, especially where they have piled up or matted into the lawn.
• Avoid excessive spring growth and a fatal turf disease called Snow Mold by not applying high rates of nitrogen fertilizer to the lawn over the winter or in the early spring.
