Follow these steps to protect the lawn from leaves as they fall to ensure adequate oxygen in your lawn:

  • Mow with a sharp blade
  • Set mower height to 2 ½” – 3 ½”
  • Mulch-Mow
    • This process works best when leaves are dry or piling up quickly
  • Bag leaves if needed
    • When leaves get so heavy they cannot be mulched, bagging is needed
    • Bagged leaves work great as garden compost
    • It is most efficient to empty your mower’s bag onto a tarp
  • Raking
    • Clean leaves from your lawn the same day
    • Don’t leave piles on the grass
  • Rain in the forecast?
    • Clean leaves up before it rains to protect your lawn!
    • After rain, clean the new leaves up as quickly as possible, before they settle into the lawn
